Meteorology

Chapter 1 of meteorology takes aspiring aviators through atmosphere and its various layers such as troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, and thermosphere.

By the time you finish chapter 1 you will realize that air around us has weight, and it presses against everything it touches. This pressure is called atmospheric pressure and has been discussed in detail in chapter -2

Chapter – 3 includes temperature, its various measuring scales, and references to these scales and how it affects the performance of an aircraft.

Chapter 4 gives you a detailed insight on air density, an important factor in aviation. Atmospheric density affects performance of an aircraft significantly by affects lift, thrust, drag, climb rate and airspeed of an aircraft.

Have you ever visited a place that made you feel hot and sticky the entire time, no matter what you did to cool off? You can thank humidity for that unpleasant feeling. Humidity is the amount of water vapor present in the air which plays an important role in all the atmospheric processes.

This chapter takes you through the behaviour of air in the earth’s atmosphere, which is influenced by a range of factors, including temperature, pressure, and humidity. Understanding these concepts is critical for aspiring aviators to predict changes in weather patterns.

The understanding of Jet stream is very important for understanding temperate cyclones and Indian monsoons and thus we have a dedicated chapter on the subject.

The study of winds is essential for aspiring aviators as wind can make a huge difference to several aspects of flight. This chapter includes winds and how it can cause problems, creating severe turbulence.

Chapter 9 includes the study of vertical motion and clouds, how it is essential in aviation and how it causes weather, turbulence, convergence, divergence, wind shear etc.

This chapter incorporates the various optical phenomenon frequently occurring in the atmosphere and their importance in aviation.

The word turbulence means sudden, unpredicted air movements due to storms, atmospheric pressure, air around mountains and weather fronts leading to a bumpy aeroplane ride. This chapter takes you through clear air turbulence and its causes.

Be it small or big a mountain in aviation causes phenomena of atmospheric waves eventually affecting the aircraft. This chapter delves into the potential turbulence, wind patterns and safety considerations associated with these unique atmospheric conditions.

The study of precipitation is important for aspiring aviators. Precipitation, sometimes cause adverse effect on aircraft performance and thus is a hot subject in meteorology. This one is a dedicated chapter on precipitation.

Poor visibility in aviation is alarming! In this chapter, you will learn about the major reasons of poor visibility, fog being one of them.

As an aspiring aviator it is extremely essential to know that icing has serious impact on the aerodynamics of an aircraft. It may even lead to loss of control of the aircraft. Yes, it does sound alarming! This chapter takes you through the various types of icing and its formation.

This chapter has been designed to explain airmasses in the simplest way possible. In meteorology, an airmass is usually defined as a large body of air.

Once you are clear with the concept of airmasses, it is important for you to know what happens when these airmasses come together from different directions and eventually meet. This chapter focusses on another important topic of meteorology known as fronts and western disturbances.

The study of Indian climatology is extremely important for aspiring aviators as it helps determine future climate expectations. There are four major seasons that are dominant in India. They are winter, summer, monsoon, and autumn season. This chapter deep dives into the varied climatology of India.

In the previous chapters you have learnt about some of the hazardous phenomenon in aviation. This chapter takes you through another aviation hazard known as thunderstorm. This word sounds familiar, right.

A tropical cyclone is a rapid rotating storm originating over tropical oceans from where it draws the energy to develop. Chapter – 20 teaches you cyclones and gives you all the necessary information imperative to know as an aspiring pilot.

Depressions are frequent at sea in middle latitudes and are responsible for most strong winds and unsettled weather. The same has been discussed, in detail in Chapter – 21.

The chapter on tropical systems takes you through extremely important concepts in meteorology such as Tropical discontinuities or convergence zones.

This chapter incorporates the study of general circulation, an essential topic in meteorology. The large scale, static or semi-permanent, pressure and wind patterns on the globe are termed as General Circulation.

This chapter is all about meteorological services for aviation whose objective is to ensure safety and efficiency of air navigation. Met services for aviation in India are provided by the India Met Department.

This chapter covers weather radar and met services which has become an integral part of aviation contributing towards flight safety.

Meteorological instruments used to find the state of the atmosphere at a given time has been included in this chapter.

This chapter takes you through symbolic illustrations showing the weather occurring at a given reporting system known as station models.
